The song concludes with diction that creates a sense of urgency and hopelessness and continues the motif of being trapped. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “alibi” as, “The pleas of being elsewhere at the time an alleged act took place.” Its etymology stems from the same word in Latin, which means “elsewhere.” The choice of this word is interesting as it implies there is guilt associated with what takes place at the “Hotel California.” At the end of this verse the song reminds you to “bring your alibis”. Since this verse is now in the context of the previous passage, which referenced addiction to materialism, it now creates a feeling of being eerily trapped. When the traveler asks for some wine the “captain” says, “we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine.” Here the Eagles are using a pun to metaphorically show the loss of creativity and culture from the ‘60s that occurred as a result of becoming trapped in the indulgent life of the “Hotel California.” Now to juxtapose the idea of living rich and in excess with becoming trapped the verse that includes, “Welcome to the Hotel California” is once again repeated. A feeling of being trapped begins to overcome the listener at this point. However as the song continues lines such as, “Her mind is tiffany-twisted,/ she got the Mercedes bends” serve as a play on words to create the image of people who are obsessed with their expensive possessions and jaded. In the first context it has an upbeat connotation as the traveler is weary and the shelter is welcome and inviting. The verse that includes “Welcome to the Hotel California” is repeated twice in the song in different contexts. Following the most well known line in the song is uttered, “Welcome to the Hotel California.” The traveler then foreshadows the coming despair in the song by stating, “this could be heaven or this could be hell” in reference to the hotel. This atmosphere is symbolic of most peoples desire to live a life of luxury, and the ease with which it is easy to cross the inviting line into excess and greed. Phrases such as “cool wind in my hair” and “warm smell of colitas,” work to create a relaxing, pleasant, and calm atmosphere, which disarms the traveler as well as the listener of worry. Immediately in the first stanza one will notice that the diction is pleasant in nature. Juxtaposition, diction, and repetition, are effectively used by the Eagles to create a sense of allurement and addiction in the construction of the allegory. The song is in essence an allegory that uses a traveler and a hotel to symbolize a person getting trapped in an attractive but nonetheless destructive lifestyle of excess. The hotel at first seems magical, but the traveler eventually realizes that there is something evil in its nature. In the song a traveler driving through the desert grows tired and stops to check in to an inviting hotel. Bottom line.if they keep making juice that's this tasty, I'll be hard pressed to care if it gets poured out of a Franzia box.The song “Hotel California” which was written by the Eagles in the late 1970’s provides a depiction of the inviting but destructive lifestyle that existed among the wealthy at the time on the west coast. While I personally might find the name odd, I'm not really from the era where Hotel California evokes a feeling or meaning. This is a solid juice that is good for aficionados or newbies and it's got all of the elements that you'd want from a good reposado.

Good balance, lots of agave flavor and a longer linger with nice pepper & spice notes. However, the fruit arrives after a decent while and you get to taste it yet again. It works really well for this one.įinish: A long linger that is more agave kick and wood/dark chocolate than the fruitiness. The spices and the oak come forward a bit and make a nice sweet & bitter combo.

Initial Taste: Agave, orchard fruits (pears, plums) and baking spice on the entry.īody: A thick and oily body. Fruity agave with hints of vanilla and spice notes. Presentation and marketing can do some things, but ultimately the juice inside the bottle has to sustain it.Īroma: Love the nose. The bottle is a beautiful red and the cap sort of looks like a weapon, so the packaging is very striking. The name Hotel California doesn't put me in Jalisco or evoke anything from me that makes me think of authentic Mexican items. I'm not even sure where to start with the intro on this one.
